Interviews with our I-students

What is it like to study Industrial Engineering and Management at Chalmers? Read the interviews below!

Inez Antmar - 3rd year

Hi!

My name is Inez, I'm from Lund, and I'm currently in my third year of Industrial Engineering and Management. In high school, I wanted to become a lawyer, so I studied economics with law. After both a trip to Asia and a ski season, I decided to try the technical preparatory year at Chalmers, which later made me want to study the I-program. Besides my studies, I enjoy working out and spending time with my friends.

During my first year at Chalmers, I was part of the section's event committee (sexmästeri), which was a great experience. I got to know people not only from my class but also from other programs and even other universities across Sweden.

What do you like most about Industrial Engineering & Management?

What I like the most is the people I study with. It's incredibly rewarding to meet such driven and friendly individuals. I also appreciate how broad the program is, which means you don’t have to decide on a specific career path until after you’ve finished your studies.

Gabriel Alenäs - år 3

Hi!

My name is Gabriel, I’m 22 years old, and originally from Kungsbacka. In high school, I studied the Natural Science Program, and after that, I completed the technical preparatory year here at Chalmers. During that time, I worked and traveled a lot before finally moving to Gothenburg.

I think Gothenburg is the perfect place to combine student life with city life, and the people here are incredibly friendly! Besides my studies, I enjoy spending time with friends and playing golf.

How does it work to combine studies in Industrial Engineering and Management with other interests?

It works incredibly well. Of course, school takes up a lot of time, but there is also a lot of flexibility in how you manage your study schedule. This makes it possible to integrate different interests. Personally, I have traveled and played sports (mainly golf) a lot during study periods, and it has never been a problem to balance both!

What should you do to prepare for university?

Sign up for housing queues! Even if you’re not completely sure where or what you want to study yet, I highly recommend doing this everywhere possible. In Gothenburg, the main ones to keep an eye on are Chalmers Studentbostäder and SGS Studentbostäder.

Another tip is to refresh your math skills by taking a summer math course, especially if it’s been a while since you last studied math. This will make your first study period much easier, allowing you to spend more time enjoying fun events and meeting new friends instead of stressing over the math course.

Joel Broberg Olsson - 2nd year

Hi, my name is Joel Broberg Olsson, I’m from Gothenburg, and I’m currently in my second year of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Before starting at Chalmers, I took two gap years after high school. During these years, I spent my winters in the Alps, where I skied a lot and worked a bit. This experience gave me a fresh start and the motivation to start studying again, which I felt was missing after three tough years in high school.

My whole life, I have been dedicated to tennis, competing both nationally and internationally. Being able to continue training while studying has been amazing and was one of the reasons I chose to stay in Gothenburg!

Why did you choose Industrial Engineering and Management?

After studying the Natural Science Program in high school, I felt that technical subjects suited me well, which made Chalmers an obvious choice. At the same time, I wanted to explore my interest in economics and organization, which made Industrial Engineering and Management a natural choice after researching different programs. Besides being a great education that opens many doors to exciting career opportunities, the student section is incredibly fun to get involved in. There are tons of committees and groups constantly organizing exciting activities!

I can without a doubt say that choosing to study Industrial Engineering and Management has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Klara Nygren - 3rd year

Hi!

My name is Klara, I’m 23 years old, and I’m in my third year of Industrial Engineering and Management. I’m from Helsingborg and moved to Gothenburg when I started studying at Chalmers.

In high school, I studied the Natural Science Program, and after graduation, I took the opportunity to travel and live abroad for two years before starting my studies.

During my first year at Chalmers, I decided to get involved in the student section and joined the section’s event committee, isex! We organized formal dinners and nightclub events, which was a fantastic experience! It also gave me the chance to meet so many people from both my section and the rest of Chalmers.

It was truly the best possible start to my five years in the I-program!

Why did you choose Industrial Engineering and Management?

By studying the Natural Science Program in high school, I realized that I had an interest in technical subjects, which made it quite clear that I wanted to pursue an engineering degree. I considered several different fields, but after visiting a few universities, I felt that Industrial Engineering and Management at Chalmers would suit me best.

I was drawn to the broad scope of the program and the many career opportunities available after graduation. I also appreciated the combination of technical engineering courses and economics courses.

I chose Chalmers specifically because I liked the opportunity to combine student life with being close to a big city, and it’s a decision I’m very happy with!

Johannes Johansson - 3rd year

Hi!

My name is Johannes, and I grew up in Uddevalla. I’m currently in my third year of the I-program and I’m really enjoying it.

When I’m not studying, I love sports—everything from tennis to skiing. Moving to Gothenburg and starting my studies has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It hasn’t just been incredibly fun, but I’ve also grown a lot as a person.

Have you been involved in student life?

A big part of what has made my time at university so enjoyable is the people and all the activities the program offers. I highly recommend getting involved in something you enjoy and feel motivated by. Even though there are both pros and cons, in the end, it gives you much more than it takes.

During my first year, I joined the section’s sports society, where I helped organize Tuesday runs, Sunday activities, and much more. Later, I became a member of the section’s career group, where I helped arrange our career fair, I-dagen—an experience that was both fun and rewarding.

What do you like most about Industrial Engineering & Management?

The absolute best thing about the program is the people—both in my class and throughout the program. It’s incredibly rewarding to meet so many driven and friendly individuals.Additionally, the education feels highly relevant for the job market after graduation. The combination of economic understanding and solid technical knowledge is unique and valuable.

Hampus Evaldsson - 3rd year

My name is Hampus, and I’m 24 years old. I’m currently in my third year of Industrial Engineering and Management, and I really enjoy both the program and campus life.

Football has always been a big part of my life—I love watching matches and used to play growing up. During my time in the section, I was active in our sports association (IF), which was a fantastic experience. It gave me the chance to meet new people and give back to the section.

When I’m not on campus, I enjoy spending time with friends and working out.

What do you like most about Industrial Engineering & Management?

The best thing about Industrial Engineering and Management for me is the variety and opportunities. The program combines technology and economics in a way that is both challenging and rewarding. But what truly makes it special is the people and the sense of community within the section. Whether it’s studying together or attending one of the many events, there’s always something that makes student life fun and meaningful.I also appreciate how much Chalmers as a whole has to offer—there’s truly something for everyone, no matter your interests. Choosing Industrial Engineering and Management at Chalmers was one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I highly recommend it to anyone curious about an education that opens many doors.
