Ask a student
If you have any questions at all - about anything from what it's like to move to Gothenburg, attend Chalmers, student life in Gothenburg, study Industrial Engineering and Management, choose an education, committees or similar - then don't hesitate to ask. I promise to answer!
Shadow a student
Shadowing a student means that you get to follow a day at school with lectures, labs, seminars or group work, all depending on what the schedule is for the day. Shadowing a student is a good opportunity to try out Industrial Engineering for a day. You get to see the campus while also being able to ask questions about what it's like to study Industrial Engineering at Chalmers.
You can choose to shadow a student for half or a full day. Contact us via email and we will agree on a day when you can visit us.
To get an overview of the Industrial Engineering and Management (I-programme) here at Chalmers, below is a summary of the three years of the bachelor’s degree, what a teknikinriktning is and which ones you can choose from, as well as which master’s programmes you can study after completing your bachelor’s. The programme is constantly evolving and courses may be replaced to ensure the education matches the changing needs of the job market, but the foundation remains the same.
The first year builds a good foundation for the years to come, with courses consisting of a mathematics track in parallel with an economics and management track, where you get a taste of subjects such as project management and sustainability. The second year includes less mathematics and instead offers courses in programming, industrial marketing, logistics, and physics.
In the spring of the second year, all students choose a teknikbas, which is a package of four courses taken during the third year. After receiving presentations on the four inriktningar, you choose the one that suits you best. The specializations offered are Industriell Produktion (Industrial Production), Informationsteknik (IT), Kemi- och Bioteknik, and Finansiell Matematik. In the final year of the bachelor’s, you take courses according to your teknikinriktning, one in each study period. In the autumn, you take courses in the history of technology and business, and in innovation economics, and in the spring you write your bachelor’s thesis.
After three years in the programme, it’s time to take the next step—applying for a master’s! There are three master’s programmes where I-students are guaranteed a place: Management and Economics of Innovation, Quality and Operations Management, and Supply Chain Management. In addition, outside the place guarantee, you can also study the following master’s programmes: Design and Construction Project Management, Entrepreneurship and Business Design, and Industrial Ecology.
In addition to the previously mentioned programmes open to all I-students, there are other master’s programmes available depending on which teknikinriktning you chose for your third year: Product Development and Production Engineering (Industriell produktion), Data Science and AI and Software Engineering and Technology (Informationsteknik), Materials Chemistry and Biotechnology (Kemi- resp Bioteknik), and Engineering Mathematics and Computational Science (Finansiell matematik)

The Student City of Göteborg
The Student City of Gothenburg
Gothenburg is a city full of diversity, both when it comes to people and the environment. In a single day, you can take a stroll through Slottsskogen park, enjoy a fika at one of the hipster cafés in Majorna, and then continue on to Avenyn. It’s also easy to get around both in and outside the city center, which gives you the opportunity to discover new hidden gems beyond the central areas. It’s simply a small town in a big city package.
The facilities for Industrial Engineering and Management, the white buildings with green roofs shown in the slideshow below, are located at the very top toward the city center on the Johannesberg Campus. The nearest tram stop is Kapellplatsen, but you can reach central spots like Götaplatsen within a 5-minute walk
Nightlife
If you want to broaden your horizons and explore the nightlife beyond Chalmers’ own pubs, there’s plenty to see. Grab a beer on Andra Långgatan, have a cocktail at one of the city’s rooftop bars, and then wander up along Avenyn for a full night out. Most of the city’s clubs are there, and going to YAKI after a tough exam week with all your classmates has never been more fun.
Getting Around
As many know, Gothenburg is the city of trams. Their network stretches across the entire city, allowing you to smoothly get from one end to the other. But if you want to get around the city center quickly, any electric scooter or the “Styr & Ställ” city bikes are two great options.
Housing
With a limited student budget, finding housing in a big city like Gothenburg can feel challenging, but here are a few tips for finding your own little place. Start by signing up for the right housing queues: Chalmers Studentbostäder and SGS, which offer apartments and student rooms near campus and around the city. Good to know—Chalmers Studentbostäder gives you two queue days per day while you are studying. Another option is to check Blocket for sublet contracts. You can also join the Boplats queue, but patience is required there.
The Archipelago and Saltholmen
A ride on tram number 11 will take you out to Saltholmen, which offers fantastic swimming opportunities. From Saltholmen, ferries depart for Gothenburg’s southern archipelago. If the northern archipelago is more appealing, it’s time to hop on the Röd Express bus. After a little over half an hour, you’ll arrive at Lilla Varholmen, and from there you can reach the islands by ferry.
Slottsskogen and Other Parks
Gothenburg has many beautiful parks. Discover the Rose Garden and Palm House in the Garden Society, have a picnic and visit the animal enclosures in Slottsskogen, or enjoy a walk through the Botanical Garden and take the opportunity to visit the Änggårdsbergen nature reserve.
The Student life at Chalmers
Student Life at Chalmers
Student life at Chalmers consists of a large number of groups, events, and its own terminology, and it’s very hard to grasp the full scope of it all before you actually start. Here’s a small taste of what happens around campus and within our section.
The Cortège
The Cortège is a carnival parade that takes place along the streets of Gothenburg every year on Walpurgis Night (April 30). The parade consists of floats on truck beds depicting various events and news stories from the past year—all built by students and all presented with a hefty dose of Gothenburg humor. This period is one of the most wonderful of the year. The week leading up to Walpurgis is filled with celebrations and parties, and a fantastic atmosphere fills the entire campus. The Cortège is the largest annually recurring student event in the Nordic countries, with an estimated audience of around 250,000 people! It is said that you’re not truly a Chalmers student until you’ve built the Cortège.
Committees and Societies
The terms “committee” and “society” both refer to smaller groups of students with a specific purpose. A committee is appointed by a section or by the Chalmers Student Union to carry out a particular task, while a society is formed on the initiative of individual students. At Chalmers, these types of groups can be found everywhere, doing everything from running pubs and organizing career fairs to building robots. All Chalmers societies and committees are characterized by an incredible sense of community, and attending their events—or joining them yourself—is an easy way to have a ton of fun and make friends for life!
Read more about the Industrial Engineering section’s committees/societies here, and about the Student Union’s committees/societies here.
Pub Crawl
On the first Thursday of every study period—that is, four times a year—all pubs and bars on the Chalmers campus open their doors. Around 20 bars are at your disposal. Each one is unique in its own way, but student-friendly prices, friendly staff, and a safe atmosphere are guaranteed at every single one. It’s an excellent opportunity to discover new parts of campus and meet people from other sections! How many pubs can you check off the list?
