Gothenburg as a student city

If you want to broaden your horizons and discover the nightlife outside of Chalmers' own pubs, there is plenty to see. Grab a beer on Andra Långgatan, have a drink at one of the city's rooftop terraces, and then walk up Avenyn for a full night out. Most of the city's clubs are located there, and YAKI after a tough exam week with all your coursemates has never been more fun.

Getting around

As many know, Gothenburg is the city of trams. Their network stretches across the entire city, allowing you to easily travel from one end to the other. However, if you want to get around the city center quickly, any electric scooter or a Styr & Ställ bike are two great alternatives.

Housing

With a limited student budget, finding housing in a big city like Gothenburg can feel difficult, but here are some tips on how to successfully find your own little home in Gothenburg. Start by signing up for the right housing queues—register with Chalmers Studentbostäder and SGS, which offer apartments and student rooms near campus and around the city. Good to know is that Chalmers Studentbostäder gives two queue days per day while you are studying. Another option is to check Blocket for sublet contracts. You can also sign up with Boplats, but patience is required there.

The Archipelago and Saltholmen

A ride on tram number 11 takes you out to Saltholmen, which offers fantastic swimming opportunities. From Saltholmen, ferries depart to Gothenburg’s southern archipelago.

If you’re instead drawn to Gothenburg’s northern archipelago, it's time to hop on the Röd Express bus. After a 30-minute bus ride, you’ll arrive at Lilla Varholmen, where you can then take a ferry to the islands.

Slottsskogen &
other parks

Gothenburg has many beautiful parks. Discover the Rose Garden and Palm House in Trädgårdsföreningen, enjoy a picnic and visit the animal enclosures in Slottsskogen, or take a walk through the Botanical Garden and make sure to visit the Änggårdsbergen Nature Reserve.
